Born in Jiangmen, China, in 1929, Dr Lui moved to Hong Kong with his family when he was five years old. To survive in what became a war-torn city, required all the young Dr Lui’s inner strength and creativity. Working with his grandmother, he sold peanuts and snacks wherever he could to help support his family.
However, encountering adversity, hardship and violence, at such a young age taught Dr Lui some profound lessons. He learned to treasure peace and harmony, he developed his capacity for perseverance, and the seeds of compassion and selflessness were sown in his heart. In recent decades, Dr Lui has donated considerable time and resources to his work with a host of international charitable causes and institutes of higher learning, and he has been widely recognised for his generosity towards the less fortunate. His profound belief that education is essential for the betterment of society has led him to sponsor schools and universities, scholarships and exchange programmes, and academic research.
Dr Lui has also been very supportive of developments in the fields of medical care, innovative technology, arts and culture, environmental stewardship and the promotion of harmonious co-existence.
