Prof. Binglin GU

Professor Binglin Gu, born in 1945 in Dehui of Jilin Province, is a physicist, materials scientist and member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

Starting from 1965, Gu studied at the Department of Engineering Physics, Tsinghua University. Upon graduating in 1970, he started working at Tsinghua University. From 1973 to 1975 and again from 1978 to 1979, Gu attended Tsinghua University’s postgraduate courses on solid-state physics. From 1979 to 1982, he studied at Aarhus University, Denmark, and received his PhD degree.

At Tsinghua University, Prof GU worked as the Director of the Institute of Modern Physics, the Head of the Department of Physics, the Dean of the Graduate School, the Vice-President of the University. He also chaired the Degree Conferral Committee. He was the President of Tsinghua University from 2003 to 2012 and led the university making remarkable progress in its world-class university development.

Professor GU is a recipient of honorary doctorates from Notre Dame University in USA, Waseda University in Japan, Loughborough University in UK, Ecole Centrale de Lyon in France, and Saint-Petersburg State University of Economics in Russian Federation. He also holds an honorary professorship with Aarhus University in Denmark and a guest professorship with Tohoku University in Japan. He has been a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) since 1999, member of the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) since 2005 and foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA) since 2010.

Professor GU currently serves as the Director of Institute for Advanced Study and the Director of Institute for Cross-Strait Development of Tsinghua University. He also holds important positions in some national organizations, including the Honorary President of Beijing Association for Science and Technology, a member of Presidium of the CAS Academic Divisions, a member of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, a member of Committee of National Science and Technology Award.

Professor GU has been committed to research and education in physics and materials science and has made many important contributions in these areas. The major awards he has been granted include Technological Sciences Award sponsored by the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation, the National Natural Science Award, the Science and Technology Award for Chinese Universities, the Top Prize for Excellent Teachers Award sponsored by the Baosteel Education Foundation, and the Prize of National Teaching Achievements.
