Welfare Betterment Prize Laureate - The World Meteorological Organization (WMO)

Venue: V322 Lecture Theatre Jockey Club Innovation Tower The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

Speaker: Prof Petteri Taalas (Secretary-General, World  Meteorological Organization)

Topic: Towards a Weather and Climate  Resilient World

Abstract of the Lecture

Weather, climate and water are vital to public well-being. They can likewise be destructive. High-impact events like tropical cyclones, heavy rain, heatwaves, droughts and winter storms have taken lives and livelihoods throughout the ages. And it has become clear that climate change is causing an increase in the intensity and frequency of many of these events.

Fortunately, momentum is growing towards more ambitious action to tackle climate change and build resilience.

WMO is pressing ahead with initiatives to strengthen multi-hazards early warning systems and to support wider disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation efforts.

WMO aims to fill the gaps and to break the barriers in delivering accurate and timely forecasts, people-centred and impact-based multi-hazard warnings and user-friendly climate services around the world to build a more resilient society. By doing so, WMO will contribute to fully implementing the United Nations 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development including  global efforts in reducing disaster risk and combating impact of climate change. We will be building the world we want!
